And meantime, nobody is talking about how to tax this growing wealth, how to capture the value of these huge piles of assets. Nobody is talking about what the ProPublica article was talking about. That is, nobody until Elizabeth Warren in 2019.
I mean look — this episode is good. It’s fine. In a lot of ways, it’s what I expected in that it critiques the system while still kind of exonerating the participants. But it’s a pretty egregious oversight, in my opinion, to have a 30-minute long podcast episode about taxing the rich and not only fail to mention Bernie Sanders once (seriously, I just double-checked the transcript to make sure I didn’t just miss the mention), but claim that Warren was the first person to talk about hiking taxes considerably on the extremely rich. Even if you want to charitably argue that they’re referring only to prominent figures in a position to actually do something about it, it’s still just wrong to claim that Warren was the first to discuss it. Especially in 2019 — even Warren was talking about it before 2019. We can certainly debate levels and plans, but to claim that Warren, in 2019, was the first person to seriously look at taxing the ultra-wealthy takes a pretty unique level of willful ignorance of even just our recent history.
(In fact, yesterday was a banner day for podcasts ignoring leftist policies that have been around for years, as Axios decided to claim that nobody has presented serious, comprehensive reform to the US medical system.)
