Lydon went on to explain that his support began after the president was accused of being racist. “I’ve been accused of the very same thing, so I’m offended for anybody who’s called that,” he divulged.

Ah yes, the infallible logic that being accused of something bad means you must stand with anyone who has been accused of the same thing regardless of whether or not it is true. “I was acquitted on a false murder charge, so I stand with anyone accused of murder,” Lydon might say of Dahmer or Manson. (Of course, it’s worth noting that in the incident to which Lydon is referring, “racist” is an accurate description.)

Anywho. It’s not really all that surprising that Lydon is a Trump supporter — besides the fact that the Sex Pistols were manufactured at least to some extent, Trump attracts people who are professional antagonists, and the thing about counterculture is that it sometimes attracts people who are less dissatisfied with a specific culture and more just perpetual antagonists. People like Lydon are necessary to remind us that “If you aren’t angry, you aren’t paying attention” has its limits. People should be very angry right now about a lot of things, but it’s important to understand why you’re angry and what you’re angry about, as well as what the people who you believe to be on your side are angry about — those two things might not necessarily align as well as you’d like them to.
